Work with an academic coach

Academic coaching offers you space to think out loud with someone about your academic goals and how to reach them. Whether you're seeking support with planning your time, balancing responsibilities, studying more effectively, overcoming procrastination, or catching up on schoolwork, coaching can help!

Academic coaching is for any OSU student, no matter your year in school, major, or perceived level of success. Students try academic coaching at different times in their academic career, such as when they are…

  • Looking for ways to study more effectively
  • Upgrading their academic habits and systems
  • Working towards ambitious or long-term academic goals
  • Transitioning to OSU from high school, another college, or a break from school
  • Adjusting to unfamiliar or challenging coursework
  • Catching up after falling behind
  • Recovering from something unexpected

Why coaching?

Academic coaching is so powerful because it centers on you and helping you find what works for you. You know yourself best. The way you learn, how you approach academics, your classes, and your life outside of academics are all unique. You’re in the best position to come up with ideas and plans that work for you. That’s why coaching works best as a series of conversations – it gives you space to experiment with strategies, reflect on what’s working (and what’s not), and refine your systems and approach over time. The process is collaborative and empowering, helping you build techniques and approaches that truly fit your needs.

What to expect during a coaching appointment

Academic coaches are OSU students who are trained to support your thinking and planning towards your academic goals. Each appointment is 45 minutes in person (Waldo 125) or on Zoom. During your appointment, your coach will listen, ask questions, take notes, and offer encouragement. Occasionally, your coach might introduce strategies or resources to support your thinking, but most of the ideas and strategies will come naturally from you. At the end of your appointment, you’ll leave with a personalized set of action steps that you’ve curated to support your progress.

What students say about coaching

"It was really nice to review my current study system as well as the possible additions to that system that I have been considering recently - getting an outside opinion and being asked questions was helpful."

"It helped me look at the big picture of everything that I am struggling with when it comes to getting organized for classes and create a plan to address it and figure out what will work best for me to be successful at OSU."
